Mexican authorities to show impact of higher tariffs on the US

Mexican authorities will today present data on the impact on the US economy if the increase in tariffs announced by the president-elect of the neighbouring country, Donald Trump, were to be implemented.

«Tomorrow a Council of Businessmen that we have been forming for some time, coordinated by Altagracia Gómez, and the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, will be here tomorrow,» said President Claudia Sheinbaum yesterday in her usual meeting with journalists.

After releasing a letter addressed to Trump, the president said that this Wednesday they will provide information on what the increase in tariffs would mean for the United States, the impact that the US economy would have if tariffs were to be raised.

«And in addition, we have been working for some time on what we call Plan Mexico, the Shared Prosperity Plan; tomorrow there will be a preview and this will be presented next week at an event,» she explained.

The day before, Ebrard highlighted the response of the president to Trump’s threats and called to close ranks with her.

«President Claudia Sheinbaum’s firm response to President Donald Trump. Time to close ranks with her. The tariff is a tax and would harm both countries. We will find a solution. See you tomorrow, on the people’s morning. Mexico will come out, once again, ahead!!!», she said on X.

In the letter to Trump, the president considered that threats and tariffs will not solve the migration phenomenon and drug consumption in the neighbouring country, and indicated that cooperation and reciprocal understanding are required for these great challenges.

In view of Trump’s statements about raising tariffs on products from Mexico, Canada and China from the first day of his government, Sheinbaum warned that «one tariff will be followed by another in response, and so on, until we put common companies at risk».

She mentioned that among Mexico’s main exporters to the neighbouring nation are the North American companies General Motors and Ford Motor Company, she wondered why impose a tax on them and argued that it is not acceptable and would cause inflation and job losses in both countries.

He emphasised Mexico’s comprehensive policy on migrants, which has reduced the flow of migrants by 75 percent from December 2023 to November of this year, according to figures from the US Customs and Border Patrol.
