Trade union organisations in Colombia will march across the country today in support of the government of Gustavo Petro and in rejection of right-wing manoeuvres to remove him from power.
According to the president of the General Confederation of Labour, Percy Oyola, all the conditions were created for the mobilisations in support of the programme promoted by the current government.
«In the case of Bogotá, we are calling a rally at 11 a.m. in the Plaza de Bolívar, and so, on a national level, rallies are being organised to confront the coup planned against the President of the Republic,» he told the press.
The union leader also took the opportunity to censure the actions of the National Electoral Council, which, he explained, has no jurisdictional powers and dares to initiate an investigation and promote sanctions against the President of the Republic.
He added that this is a way of creating conditions for a coup, as was the atmosphere created around the truckers’ strike at the beginning of this month, as well as the rest of the expressions that originate with the aim of removing the president and his proposals.
He described this as a threat to democracy that must be confronted with social and popular mobilisation.
The president of the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores, Fabio Arias, indicated that the mobilisations are also intended to send a message to the Constitutional Court to dismiss a lawsuit that seeks to annul the Pension Law, recently approved by the president.
In order to contribute to safeguarding the law, members of the political coalition Historic Pact asked the elderly and all citizens to join in the events that will take place during the day.
The Colombian Federation of Education Workers also called on social networks to mobilise their affiliates to defend democracy, social reforms, peace and unity.
