Leyanis Pérez and Liadagmis Povea Achieve World Podium-Worthy Marks

The two athletes from Pinar del Río are enjoying a year of stability and results, positioning them among the top favourites ahead of the imminent global outdoor championship.

Cuban triple jumpers Leyanis Pérez and Liadagmis Povea dominated with impressive performances at the Brescia Grand Prix in Italy this Tuesday, one of the most anticipated events on the international calendar.

At the Gabre Gabric Stadium, Leyanis—current world number one—and her compatriot Liadagmis, ranked fourth globally, led the competition with jumps of 14.92m and 14.84m. These results confirm their strong form heading into the World Championships in Tokyo, scheduled for 13–21 September.

Leyanis Pérez, this year’s indoor champion in Nanjing, opened with 14.22m, followed by 14.86m. Her third attempt reached 14.92m, repeated on her fifth jump, while her fourth and sixth efforts measured 14.66m and 14.81m respectively—a remarkably consistent series at this stage of the season.

Meanwhile, Liadagmis Povea, runner-up at the Nanjing indoor event, started modestly at 13.97m. After three fouls, her fourth attempt soared to 14.84m, securing silver and marking her season’s best. She closed with 14.59m, per the event’s official website.

Jamaica’s Shanieka Ricketts, ranked second this season, took bronze with 14.56m on her final jump.

The two athletes from Pinar del Río confirmed their pre-competition favourite status. Their consistent performances this year position them as leading contenders for the upcoming global outdoor championship.

The 23-year-old Pérez dominated authoritatively in her last summer tour appearance at the Oslo Diamond League with 14.72m, following her world-leading 14.93m at the Indoor World Championships.

Povea achieved her best result on the European summer tour. Previously, she had surpassed 14.30m only once in four outings—including gold at Spain’s Iberdrola League Honor Division—and placed third at the Sotteville International Meeting.

In the same Italian venue, Greisys Roble faced a strong American contingent in the 100m hurdles. Despite a solid 12.98 seconds, she finished fifth. Alia Armstrong led the U.S. trio with 12.53 seconds, followed by Masai Russell (12.69) and Alexandra Webster (12.71) on the podium.

Attention now turns to Madrid this Saturday, where Cuba will be represented by Lázaro Martínez (triple jump), Roxana Gómez (400m), Daily Cooper (800m), and Hayla González (long jump), bypassing the London Diamond League stop.
