Jorge Luis Barcelán to be inducted into the Weightlifting Hall of Fame in the continent

The news was confirmed by the top management of the sport in the country.

The National Weightlifting Federation learned today about the appointment of its president, Dr. C. Jorge Luis Barcelán Santa Cruz, to the Hall of Fame of this sport at continental level.

The appointment was notified by the continental entity by means of a communiqué addressed to the maximum direction of weightlifting in the Island.

The letter highlights that the election was made at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Pan American federation, organised in Lima, Peru.

It states that «this is a just recognition to a coach who has put the name of Cuba and America on a high level».

Barcelán Santa Cruz has been at the head of the Cuban federation of this sport for about a decade, a period in which he has achieved outstanding results in multiple scenarios.

His meritorious work earned him the election as vice-president of the continental entity at the beginning of last year.

«It is a great joy for our country that one of our teachers has been elected to the continental Hall of Fame. It is a well-deserved award for his work over many years for the development of our sport. Our most sincere congratulations go to him,» said Camilo Reynaldo Ramirez, national weightlifting commissioner.

The Pan American Weightlifting Hall of Fame will be inaugurated in July 2020.

On that occasion, the first group of inductees included the Cubans Marcelino del Frade, Sergio Álvarez, Julio Echenique, Ramón Madrigal, Manuel Suárez, Carlos Cuervo, Pedro Luis Rodríguez, Pastor Rodríguez, Mario Villalobos, Rolando Leyva and Fernando Bernal.

A year later, Dr. Sc. Iván Román Suárez joined the team as an international technical officer.
