Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated today that Tehran will not sign any agreement while threats of military action against the country persist.

The Sepah News portal, linked to that institution, quoted an official familiar with the negotiations, who attributed the difficulties in reaching an understanding with Oman over the Strait of Hormuz to US interference and statements by President Donald Trump.

«As long as US interference and the threat of a military attack on Iran continue, the achievement of an agreement will be delayed. Iran will not sign any agreement under threats,» the source stated.

Tehran resumed talks with Muscat on Monday to establish mechanisms guaranteeing the safe transit of ships through that strategic waterway.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei announced technical and political progress in the consultations with Oman the previous day, although he specified that a definitive agreement has not yet been reached.

Iran and Oman share geographical and legal responsibilities over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s main routes for the transport of oil, gas and goods.

The negotiations are taking place amid strong tensions between Tehran and Washington, following the attacks launched by the United States and Israel against Iranian territory on 28 February.

According to Iranian authorities, those actions caused more than 3,000 deaths, while Tehran responded with attacks against US and Israeli targets.

Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding on 18 June and began talks to reach a definitive agreement, but differences over security and freedom of navigation in Hormuz stalled the process.

Between 8 and 24 July, the United States carried out further attacks against Iran, which responded against US military installations and equipment in several Arab countries, according to Iranian sources.
