Women in visual arts have predominantly played the role of muses, despite their presence as creators throughout art history; the evolution of various artistic expressions is practically inconceivable without female contribution.
Once again, this theme emerges in the creative discourse of an artist – this time through the personal exhibition The Legacy of Eve, a collection celebrating women who defied their time and paved new paths.
The exhibition belongs to Imandra García Alemán and can currently be enjoyed at the «Hugo Cortijo» gallery in the Avilanian city of Morón.
«My work focuses on conceptual photography with strong pictorial and classical influences. I draw inspiration from old paintings, Renaissance and Baroque aesthetics, creating images that communicate ideas, emotions and profound questions beyond mere visuals,» she explains while carefully presenting her works.
— What sparked your interest in artistic creation?
— I have no artistic influences at home – I’m the first in my family drawn to art. Since childhood I begged my mother for painting and piano lessons, but only found my true path three years ago studying at a Havana photography school. Since then, it’s been my passion.
— What references inspire your work?
— Painters like Caravaggio and Rembrandt for their lighting techniques. In contemporary photography, I identify with Hardy, Pablo Moreira and Claudia Raimat’s styles, with whom I share artistic connections.
— Why focus on femininity for this exhibition?
— As a female creator, though I don’t want to be pigeonholed, I believe womanhood must be defended – especially now when hard-won achievements are being threatened. Women must speak for themselves.
— How did you select models?
— Based on each narrative need. Many are friends, others I approached on streets or at venues. All participated enthusiastically and now feel thrilled seeing the results – as do I, grateful for their collaboration.
— Beyond this exhibition’s success, what themes interest you?
— I adore street photography and want to capture Cuban daily life, particularly Havana’s nuances and contrasts. I’ll also exhibit nudes in the capital, inspired by my erotic photo shown at «Mi Gallo» salon – an concept I wish to expand.
At 29, artist Imandra García Alemán uses her lens to capture moments, emotions and feelings. The Legacy of Eve succeeds admirably – eight compelling pieces immediately engage viewers.
Despite limited experience, the creator achieves remarkable discursive coherence across her photographs, with exquisite finishing. Though her artistic journey has just begun, her work undoubtedly offers one of northern Morón’s finest cultural experiences this summer.
