Inés María Chapman Waugh, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic, presided over the second day of the meeting of the presidency of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (Uneac), in which fruitful dialogues prevail, as a prelude to the 10th Congress of the organisation.
Until Friday, at the Uneac headquarters, the provincial executives are evaluating proposals and agreements arising from the 9th Congress, such as community work, the link between culture and tourism, artistic education, the development of music and the plastic arts, among others.
On Wednesday, in the presence of Alpidio Alonso Grau, Minister of Culture, and Marta Bonet, President of Uneac, they also discussed the issues raised by the writers and artists, and the actions proposed to arrive at the 10th Congress in November with concrete answers for the delegates and the membership.
As of the IX Congress in 2019, policies were established that respond to the needs of intellectuals and creators, issues on which progress is being made, although their evaluation is constant.
Alonso Grau acknowledged the organisation’s efforts to seek solutions – in conjunction with the institutions – to the problems of artistic and literary creation, and highlighted the role of Uneac not only in the cultural universe in its commitment to the highest quality art, but also in the vocation of social service that has accompanied it since its creation. Miguel Barnet, Honorary President of Uneac, said that it is the organisation’s duty to maintain a constant battle against cultural colonisation and the influence of genres and movements lacking in value that is perceived today in various spheres of society.
In her dialogue with artists and writers, Inés María Chapman Waugh, said that the proposals and concerns of the Cuban intelligentsia need to be addressed because of their high impact on the well-being and spirituality of the nation.
We must be united to work, to defend the country, to defend the Cuban Revolution and the Cuban Socialist Revolution in spite of all the adversities, we have to find a way to solve them, because solving problems in culture is also solving them for Cuban society,» she said.
Uneac will hold its 10th Congress next November, a space that aims to be a platform that generates proposals to confront cultural colonisation and contributes to defending the most genuine aspects of Cuban art and culture.
