From Morón, a cultural bridge between Cuba and Mexico

A bridge between Aztec and Cuban cultures is being built in the city of Morón, in the province of Ciego de Ávila, through the socio-cultural project Con México en el Corazón, which today celebrates the first anniversary of its peña and Mariachi Day, instituted on 21 January to honour the promoters of this art form, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011.

Gilmé Sánchez Cordero, institutional communicator of the Municipal Directorate of Culture in the Morón territory, extended through the Cuban News Agency the invitation to join tonight a special musical revue for the anniversary of the aforementioned peña, with a fixed space in the Reverbero project, promoted by the D’ Morón Theatre Company from the Agramonte Park, close to its headquarters in the city known as Ciudad del Gallo (City of the Rooster).

Starting at 09:00 local time, a musical revue will take place, with the participation of the promoters of Con México en el Corazón, as well as professional and amateur local artists, the aforementioned theatre group, comedians and other cultural exponents, who will put on a great show, under the direction of Elizabeth Figueredo.

Winner in 2024 of the Caonabo Award for Work of the Year, the highest distinction awarded by the cultural sector in Morón, the socio-cultural project Con México en el Corazón, directed by the artist José Carlos Alfonso Borges, was born in 2023, under the auspices of the Casa de la Cultura Haydée Santamaría Cuadrado.

The cultural initiative has the motivation to preserve, disseminate and promote the Mexican musical heritage in its various manifestations and genres; in addition to stimulating programmes and actions aimed at creation, development and entertainment through this artistic expression.

Sánchez Cordero argued that the project is made up of artists and collaborators of different ages, interested in, lovers of and identified with this musical genre, who lead activities such as the peña and other initiatives such as Voces de Mariachi.

About the latter, he added that it has the social task of bringing the melody of the Latin American sister nation to neighbourhoods and communities in vulnerable conditions in the province to ensure healthy recreation and help to comfort the spirit of the people.

Inhabitants of rural settlements in the municipalities of Morón, Chambas, Bolivia, Ciro Redondo and Venezuela are among the beneficiaries of this socio-cultural project, with regular performances at the Casa de la Cultura and the Hogar de Ancianos in the city of Morón, on the first and second Thursday of each month, respectively.

It also promotes the Mexican Music Festival «Leonardo Broche in Memorian», a provincial event which, due to its social impact, in 2024 was held over two days and in competitive modalities for children, young people and adults.

For the current year they intend to consolidate the work, grow in membership, reach more communities in transformation and municipalities, as well as increase the number of activities in the territory of Morón, which includes presentations in other social, cultural and educational institutions.

They will continue to disseminate Mexican music, intertwining it with Cuban rhythms and traditions, said the director of the socio-cultural project.

In the public’s preference, the rhythms coming from Mexico occupy a privileged place in the local cultural life, having regular spaces on the local radio station CMIX Radio Morón and other institutions such as the Casa de la Trova «Pablo Bernal»; besides the existence of groups, peñas, competitive events and movements of amateur artists who cultivate this musical genre.

It is a proposal that is integrated into the cultural shows in local gastronomic and tourist facilities, and of the Jardines del Rey destination; meanwhile, it maintains a presence in the most important celebrations that take place in the municipality, including the traditional Serenata al Gallo, which every morning of May 2nd commemorates the founding anniversary of the city with a chant around its identifying symbol.

Mexican music is a colourful amalgam of genres and rhythms that exalt this sister nation, honoured in 2011, when the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) declared El Mariachi as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
