«We are aware of the operation, although we depend on the detailed report of the injury and the techniques used in the rectification to issue a prognosis for recovery,» Dr Manuel Almira, the Cuban national team doctor, told JIT.

The traumatologist said that the period off the field for the captain of the Cuban senior team could vary between four and eight months.

This will depend on factors ranging from the type of intervention to the athlete’s ability to recover.

National team coach Yunielys Castillo also expressed his support for the player, wishing him a speedy return to the field.

«We know he is very strong and still has a lot to give, obviously we need him ready as soon as possible, but first there is his health and we are convinced that he will come back stronger,» he said.

The striker needed this treatment after suffering an injury following a fall while playing in a Romanian circuit match with his team Universitatea Craiova.
