First dolphin born in Guillermo Key

Jardines del Rey’s Cayo Guillermo Dolphinarium shared the birth of its first dolphin in captivity since its founding in 2012. The exciting event marks a milestone in the history and conservation of marine life in the region.

The mother, Wendy, is the only female specimen of six in the facility’s possession. Approximately 43 years old, donated by the Cienfuegos Dolphinarium in 2013, the specimen has had four pregnancies and this is the second to result in a successful birth. Her first calf is fourteen years old and is part of the show in Cienfuegos.

Last September, an ultrasound confirmed that she was pregnant. She started to have symptoms 72 hours before, the birth was not assisted by any specialist, naturally it is done surrounded by more female dolphins, this was not her case.

Now Wendy takes her place as a mother and forbids the approach, creating an overprotection of her son, in view of the dangers existing in the current environment. She prevents her keepers from determining the sex of the new arrival.

The achievement is not only a testament to the dolphinarium’s commitment to the conservation of the species, but also an important step towards the reproduction of these wonderful creatures in the country.

The newborn dolphin is in perfect health and is under the watchful care of his trainers and staff. The birth represents a victory for Wendy and for the dolphinarium. This event is significant for the community and the marine ecosystem, it contributes to research and education about the life of dolphins in captivity.
