As a result of a survey conducted among the members of the Cuban Film Press Association (ACPC), the best national films and the 10 foreign films released in cinemas in Cuba in 2024 were selected.
The jury, made up of several specialists, including writer and journalist Rafael Grillo, professor Pedro Noa, journalist and critic Joel del Río, among other professionals in the field, chose the fiction film Una noche con los Rolling Stones, by Patricia Ramos, and the documentary Maisinicú, medio siglo después, by Mitchell Lobaina, as the best Cuban films.
Una noche…. tells the story of Rita, a woman in the mid-life crisis, who decides to end a relationship that has no future, and embarks on the search for a new love in the days leading up to the historic Rolling Stones concert in Havana in 2016.
The film, which competed at the 44th International Festival of New Latin American Cinema (FINCL), holds notable awards such as Best Feature Film at the Puerto Rico Film Festival and an Honourable Mention for the actress Lola Amores, its protagonist.
Lobaina’s documentary, meanwhile, pays tribute to the film El hombre de Maisinicú, by filmmaker Manuel Pérez Paredes, 50 years after its premiere and as a reference of the future of the seventh art in the largest of the Antilles.
With regard to international filmography, the ACPC chose a dozen titles, including Zona de interés and Saltburn, from the United Kingdom; the American films Los asesinos de la luna, by Martin Scorsese, Vidas pasadas, by Celine Song, May December, by Todd Haynes and the Irish co-production Pobres criaturas, by Yorgos Lanthimos.
Also on the list are the feature films Anatomy of a Fall (France), Perfect Days (Japan and Germany), I, Captain (Italy) and The Snow Society (Spain), nominated for an Oscar and multi-award winner at the Goya Awards.
From the recently concluded 45th edition of FINCL, the jury chose four films as the most outstanding: the Mexican La Cocina, by Alonso Ruizpalacios and winner of the Coral Award for best fiction feature film at this important event; the Dominican Pepe, directed by Nelson Carlo de los Santos, also from Mexico to Sujo, directed by Astrid Rondero and Fernanda Valadez, and the Argentinian El Jockey, by Luis Ortega.
