Ecuador will deny safe-conduct to Glas if Mexico grants him asylum

The government of Ecuador will deny a safe-conduct to former Vice President Jorge Glas if Mexico decides to grant him political asylum, said today the Ecuadorian Foreign Minister, Gabriela Sommerfeld.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility mentioned this Friday in an interview to Ecuavisa channel that she cannot assure that the former vice-governor will remain in the diplomatic headquarters of the Central American country, where he arrived last December 17.

Sommerfeld indicated that he is in contact with the Mexican ambassador in Quito, Raquel Serur, who refers to Glas as a guest.

The head of the Ecuadorian diplomacy ratified that a delegation of the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will visit the country in the next days to deal with the issue.

Last January 5, the Ecuadorian justice ordered the preventive detention of Glas, in the midst of an investigation against him for alleged embezzlement in public works contracted after the devastating earthquake of 2016.

In view of what he considers a new onslaught of political persecution against him, the former vice president officially requested asylum from the Mexican government.

In relation to international security cooperation in the context of the internal armed conflict, Sommerfeld highlighted the collaboration of the United States, which includes equipment, services, training, intelligence, which has received many questions.

He indicated that it is not the only country, as Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Israel, France, the European Union and others have offered their help to Ecuador.

He announced that next Monday, January 29, he will have an appointment with a team from Brazil to analyze the type of cooperation and said that the President, Daniel Noboa, will give important news regarding funds obtained in his tour through the European continent, although he did not give details.
