Economy and ideology in the sights of the Communist Party of Cuba

The 9th Plenary Session of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (CCPCC), scheduled for today and tomorrow, will discuss the tasks of the political organisation to boost the economy, and its challenges in the ideological sphere.

The party meeting will address several essential issues for the country, including the role of that organisation in correcting errors and reviving the national economy and the effective insertion of state and non-state actors.

According to recent statements by CCPCC secretariat member and head of its Economic Productive Department, Jorge Luis Broche, reports will be presented on the progress of the government programme aimed at that goal presented in 2023, the proposed plan and budget of the economy for next year.

During the Ninth Plenary Session of the communist affiliation, the organisation’s Political Bureau will give an account of its management and a critical assessment will be made of negative trends in the ideology of Cuban society, among other issues, Broche said in a news briefing.

Likewise, the president of the CCPCC’s Economic Commission, and deputy to the Cuban parliament, Carlos Torres, explained that this group of experts gathered criteria from more than 90,000 people throughout the country, including economic experts, academics from universities, economic actors, members of mass organisations and party and governmental structures.

The meeting will consider some 1,000 proposals arising from these exchanges, and will carry out «a critical analysis of the functioning of the economy, its state and non-state actors, the strengthening of trade union structures in these sectors, as well as mechanisms for the promotion of cooperatives».

In this context, they will also evaluate the progress of Cuba’s strategy for macroeconomic stabilisation, incentives for foreign investment, tourism, the review of mechanisms for allocating foreign currency to companies, and the island’s foreign exchange market, Torres explained.

For his part, the head of the party’s Ideological Commission, Yoerky Sánchez, said that the Antillean nation will resolutely confront pernicious phenomena such as cultural colonisation, the uncritical acceptance of the supposed benefits of capitalism, abusive food prices, insensitivity in some officials, and bureaucratism, among others.

He affirmed that the vocation to correct negative tendencies is not new, and it was the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, who was the main driving force behind it. The Communist Party of Cuba and the revolutionary forces will succeed in reversing the problems identified, Sánchez emphasised.
