Donald Trump is sworn in as 47th US President

For the first time since 1985 very cold temperatures will deprive the United States of an outdoor presidential inauguration ceremony and Donald Trump will be inaugurated today as the 47th President from the Capitol Rotunda.

It is not what he would have wished for, obsessed as he is with crowds, but he himself admitted that it was the most appropriate thing to do to avoid possible health problems among the attendees and even the staff mobilised to guarantee the events.

For several days, the country’s capital has been breathing a sigh of relief in terms of security. The metal fences of almost three metres, deployed in the area of the Capitol, the White House and in general in dozens of city arteries, have turned the city into a labyrinth or a cage.

Due to the recent episodes of violence and threats against the president-elect, there is an unprecedented operation. More than 25,000 police and military, as well as snipers and drones watching from the air. In addition, in numbers there are at least 48 kilometres of barriers.

Despite the announcement of extreme weather, thousands of people are expected to mobilise in a demonstration called by peace groups, social movements and others.

There are banners unfurled and Prensa Latina had the chance to witness the arrival in D.C. of Trump supporters from different states of the country who are now expressing their frustration because everything has changed, as a Hispanic woman wearing sportswear and trainers with the image of the president-elect said.

This January 20, which also coincides with Martin Luther King Day. Jr. Day, a bank holiday, marks the Republican’s return to the executive mansion, after leaving without saying goodbye and without attending Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021 and then going on to win a convincing victory in the elections on 5 November.

Trump faced the Democratic candidate and vice-president Kamala Harris in an election in which nearly 240 million voters were eligible to vote, but which was decided in just seven key states (Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada, North Carolina, Georgia and Arizona).

At noon on Monday the Trump administration begins its second season and among the main actions it plans to issue dozens of executive actions during its first week in the Oval Office, but in his opinion it could reach more than 100 on the first day alone.

The measures would be aimed at increasing US energy production, strengthening border security, reducing regulations, seeking options to keep the use of Tik Tok in the country and other policy priorities.

The official ceremony for the 60th Presidential Inauguration will begin here at 12:00 p.m. ET.
