Díaz-Canel: It is the right decision, albeit late and limited

Miguel Díaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, today described as a correct decision, although late and limited in scope, the exclusion of the largest of the Antilles from the United States (US) State Department’s list of the unilateral list of sponsors of terrorism.

The blockade and most of the extreme measures put in place since 2017 to asphyxiate the Cuban economy and cause shortages for our people remain in place, the president said on his X account.

«It is a decision in the right direction, albeit belatedly and with limited scope. The blockade and most of the extreme measures that have been in place since 2017 to stifle the Cuban economy and cause shortages for our people remain in place».

In another message, Díaz-Canel thanked all those who contributed to the decision announced today by the US.

Cuba should never have been on that list of state sponsors of terrorism, he added, and emphasised that this, along with two other measures adopted, has had a high cost for the country and Cuban families.

«I thank all those who contributed to the decision announced today by the US to remove Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, which it should never have been on and which, together with two other measures adopted, has had a high cost for the country and Cuban families,» he added.

The Antillean President affirmed on the social network that they will continue to confront and denounce the economic war and the actions of interference, disinformation and discredit financed with US federal funds.

At the same time, we will not give up on developing a civilised relationship with the US that respects our sovereignty, he concluded.

«We will continue to confront and denounce the economic war and the actions of interference, disinformation and discredit financed with US federal funds. At the same time, we will not give up on developing a civilised relationship with the US that respects our sovereignty».

Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, head of the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minrex), affirmed in X that Cuba should never have been part of the arbitrary list of state sponsors of terrorism.

It was an arbitrary and politically motivated designation, he stressed, which has had a very severe impact on the Cuban population, attacking the economy, causing shortages and encouraging emigration to the US.

«Cuba should never have been part of the arbitrary list of state sponsors of terrorism. It was an arbitrary and politically motivated designation, which has had a very severe impact on the Cuban population, by attacking the economy, causing shortages and encouraging emigration to the US».

In another message, Rodríguez Parrilla thanked governments, multilateral and regional organisations, religious and civil society organisations, solidarity organisations and Cubans living abroad.

He also asked them to continue accompanying the Cuban people in their just cause until the US blockade is lifted once and for all.

«We thank governments, multilateral and regional organisations, religious and civil society organisations, solidarity, Cubans living abroad and we ask them to continue accompanying the Cuban people in their just cause until the blockade is definitively lifted».

The Cuban Foreign Ministry, in a statement on Cuba’s exclusion from the list of sponsors of terrorism, also pointed out that the decision announced today corrects, in a very restricted way, aspects of a cruel and unjust policy.

The Minrex text goes on to elaborate on some of the US government’s measures that still persist to the detriment of the Cuban population’s quality of life and the country’s economy.

Among them, it mentioned the illegal and aggressive persecution of fuel supplies that Cuba has a legitimate right to import, as well as the cruel and absurd persecution of the Caribbean nation’s legitimate international medical cooperation agreements with other countries.

Likewise, the persecution of Cuba’s international financial transactions or those of any national related to Cuba remain under prohibition and reprisals.
