Daniel Diez in the memory of Cuba and Serrana Television

The Fernando Birri Award of the International School of Cinema and Television (Eictv) was presented to Televisión Serrana, founded in Cuba 30 years ago by its creator Daniel Diez, who recently passed away.

In an emotional ceremony at the Hotel Nacional, framed in the 44th International Festival of New Latin American Cinema, the general director of the Eictv, Susana Molina, presented the award to members of this initiative of community and participatory audiovisual work that emerged in the eastern Sierra Maestra, and that changed the face of the documentary in the country.

Over the years, the filmmakers filmed the inhabitants of that area in their natural habitat, in their daily activities and with their own means of subsistence, capturing with beautiful images on screen both the environment and the simple essence of those born in that mountainous region.

Also with images the Eictv, called the school of all worlds, paid tribute to Diez and his cinematographic and teaching legacy that has influenced several generations of filmmakers from all latitudes.

During the event, the institution presented its catalog of publications and filmography, some of its main awards during the current course, and launched the official call for the 2024-2027 Regular Course.

Under the umbrella of this 44th edition of the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema of Havana, which ends on the 17th, the honorary award recently conferred to the Eictv by the Film Festival of Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain, for its contribution to the film industry, was highlighted.
