Cubans Bring Healthcare to Aztec Lands

The Cuban medical mission in Mexico, nearing its third anniversary this July, has consolidated its presence across 29 of the country’s 32 states, delivering healthcare in remote and hard-to-reach areas, stated Noemí Causa Palma, Head of the Cuban Medical Brigade in that nation.

Speaking at the XXII Meeting of Heads of Medical Missions Abroad, inaugurated this Monday, Dr. Causa informed the Cuban News Agency that the work of Cuban health professionals in Aztec territory operates under international cooperation agreements with the Mexican Institute of Social Security and Welfare (IMSS Bienestar).

She highlighted the signing of an accord with Benito Juárez University for Wellbeing, enabling Cuban specialists to teach across medical science disciplines and train professionals.

She added that the brigade receives full backing from President Claudia Sheinbaum’s government, which has maintained strong support for developing Cuban medical services.

Causa Palma noted that officials, physicians, and educators show keen interest in Cuba’s primary care model, preventive work in polyclinics, comprehensive general medicine specialisations, and care for vulnerable groups.

She affirmed that Cuban collaborators help bolster the Mexican government’s efforts to strengthen a Public Health System guaranteeing universal access and rights.

«Mexicans praise the quality of the Caribbean island’s physicians – not just professionally, but for their human qualities,» she added.

In remote regions and indigenous communities, many newborns’ lives have been saved, prenatal care has reached high standards, and surgical rates have increased, she emphasised.

The presence of Cuban health professionals in Mexico began under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who consistently championed strengthening joint cooperation across healthcare-related disciplines.
