Cuban Students Awarded at Chemistry Olympiad

Three talented Cuban youths received awards at the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), concluding today in the United Arab Emirates – a nation on the Arabian Peninsula, situated primarily along the Persian Gulf.

Held from 5 to 14 July, the competition saw three of Cuba’s four representatives earn accolades, marking a milestone in the nation’s recent participation history.

Multimedia magazine Juventud Técnica reported that the awardees include Juan Carlos Yepe Muñiz from the Vladimir Ilich Lenin Pre-University Institute of Exact Sciences (IPVCE); María Merlo Alfonso from the Eusebio Olivera Rodríguez IPVCE; and Bárbaro Rodríguez Gil from the Ernesto Che Guevara IPVCE – representing Havana, Sancti Spíritus, and Villa Clara provinces respectively.

The publication noted these achievements reflect Cuba’s strongest performance in recent IChO editions, highlighting students’ sustained dedication and the Cuban education system’s commitment to scientific excellence. It further credits the tireless work of teachers and trainers who, against all obstacles, cultivate scientific passion in new generations.

The International Chemistry Olympiad gathers the world’s brightest secondary students annually to foster academic exchange and a spirit of advancement.

For Cuba, this edition represented not only medals but also a reaffirmation of its potential on the international scientific stage.

The IChO is an annual academic competition for secondary students, first held in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1968. Since then, it has been organised each two years, with the exception of 1971.
