Cuban President talks with Sri Lankan Ambassador

Miguel Díaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, today received Admiral Damith Nishantha Sirisoma Ulugetenne, Ambassador of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, in the framework of the 65th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations between the two countries.

This was stated by the President in his account on X, who stressed that during the meeting, they agreed to continue strengthening economic and trade ties and cooperation in various fields.

«I received the Ambassador of Sri Lanka, Damith Nishantha, in the framework of the 65th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations between our countries. We agreed to continue strengthening trade and economic ties and cooperation in various fields».

On the same social network, the Presidency’s account detailed that the Cuban Head of State expressed the will to deepen and broaden relations in the political and diplomatic spheres, based on the consensus that has been built together to defend positions on the international stage, as well as in the economic sphere.

For his part, the diplomat acknowledged the assistance provided by Cuba at different times, among which he highlighted the support received after the 2004 tsunami and during the confrontation of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In September last year, Ranil Wickremesinghe, President of Sri Lanka, visited the largest of the Antilles to participate in the Group of 77 and China Summit.

As part of his activities on the island, he held official talks with the Cuban President, in which they exchanged on the good state of bilateral relations and highlighted the historical and friendly ties that unite their peoples.

Both sides also confirmed their willingness to further strengthen cooperation, as well as to promote economic and trade links in sectors of mutual interest.
