Cuba’s U-12 baseball team got its second win today at the 12th Pan American Children’s Tournament (11-12 years) in the Dominican Republic. Pan American Children’s Tournament (11-12 years), taking place in the Dominican Republic.
The team led by Bayamo’s coach Vladimir Vargas Verdecia won 13×8 against Venezuela, as journalist Enrique Portuondo told CMKX Radio Bayamo from the venue.
The Cubans hit 17 hits and committed one error in the field, while their opponents hit eight hits and made four defensive errors, said Victor Corona Miranda, head of the Caribbean delegation.
The victory went to Humberto Alfonso Nelson (Havana) and Jorge Uvero took the loss, in a match that took place at the softball field of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Centre.
Gabriel Eduardo Mustelier, a Cuban playing for Venezuela, hit a home run in the game.
«We saw the weaknesses that the team presented, mainly in base running,» declared Vargas Verdecia in a report broadcast by Cuban Television’s Noticiero del Mediodía (Noon News).
Meanwhile, Humberto Alfonso Nelson, one of the most outstanding players for the Caribbeans, said that it was an intense game, in which they went out to win from the first inning.
However, he said that the Venezuelans managed to tie the game and even took the lead, until the Cuban team finally took control of the game.
On Monday, Cuba will be undefeated against Colombia.
On Friday Cuba, who appear in Group B of the tournament, made their debut with an 8×0 win over Puerto Rico in a no-hit, no-run game.
