Claudia Sheinbaum: One Year of Progress in Mexico’s Transformation

President Claudia Sheinbaum marks one year of government in Mexico today with progress in the process of social changes and results praised inside and outside the nation

Even before succeeding the former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the current head of the executive indicated that her administration would be in charge of building the second floor of the fourth transformation, initiated precisely by her predecessor in 2018

In addition to continuing with the increase to the minimum wage and the social programmes, considered key in the reduction of inequality and the exit from poverty of 13.4 million Mexicans during López Obrador’s six-year term, Sheinbaum added three other projects

One offers bimonthly support to women from 60 to 64 years old, another secures scholarships for students of public schools, and a third, called Health House by House, guarantees medical attention at home for the elderly and people with disabilities

She also set in motion plans in education, such as the National Baccalaureate, which integrates and harmonises all Upper Middle Education Systems; inaugurated hospitals; granted support and credits for the improvement of houses, and began the construction of hundreds of thousands of homes

She gave the starting signal for new road, railway, and drinking water and sanitation projects, and her government’s strategy on security achieved a 32 percent decrease in intentional homicides in 11 months

Among the most significant elements of this period are also the modifications to the constitution, which «reverse an important part of the neoliberal reforms» and «advance democracy in the country,» stated the dignitary herself yesterday

The head of the executive referred especially to the reform to the judicial power approved in September 2024, the last month of government of López Obrador, founder of the ruling National Regeneration Movement, and the holding this year of the first judicial elections

«They have wanted to minimise it, to dirty it, but the truth is that a few no longer decide who the judges are. The people of Mexico now decide that. That is something historic,» affirmed the president during her customary meeting with the media

She mentioned, likewise, the reform concerning indigenous peoples, translated into a public budget for all native and Afro-descendant communities, and the recovery of Mexican Petroleum and the Federal Electricity Commission as public companies

Sheinbaum’s approach of firmness and a cool head in the face of the North American president, Donald Trump, labelled as arrogant and unpredictable, received applause inside and outside Mexico, a country that under the leadership of its first female president knew how to overcome obstacles without renouncing principles such as sovereignty
