Ciego de Ávila Adorns Its Face for May Day

Communal Services workers and the Costávila project are intensifying the cleaning of the city and the Pedro Martínez Brito Popular Council, the venue of the proletarian rally, on the eve of the International Workers’ Day.

With its sights set on May Day, Ciego de Ávila is advancing a broad cleaning and beautification campaign that combines institutional effort with the collective aspiration to welcome the workers’ celebration with the dignity that the Avilanian people deserve.

Leading these actions are the Communal Services workers and the Costávila project, who for days beforehand have been deploying sustained work in the city’s streets, squares and neighbourhoods.

Osmani Costa Reyes, coordinator of Costávila, specified that the initiative has already eliminated more than 150 illegal micro-dumps, with the declared purpose of completely eradicating them from the urban environment. At the same time, control over official waste sites is being maintained, and a daily sweeping of more than 200 kilometres of streets is being carried out.

The Pedro Martínez Brito Popular Council, designated as the main venue for the International Workers’ Day rally, is receiving priority attention. An extensive cleaning operation is underway there to ensure that the May Day event finds the space in optimal conditions.

Luis Alberto Pérez Olivares, provincial director of Communal Services, highlighted that work is also extending to the surrounding areas and the central square, with the support of the José Antonio Echeverría Credit and Services Cooperative (CCS), which handles clearing and scrubbing tasks in various areas. «We are working hard to achieve a May Day worthy of the people of Ciego de Ávila,» the director stated.

Pérez Olivares also stressed the importance of citizen co-responsibility in this effort, at a time when fuel shortages impose objective limits on institutional action.

The call is for the population to accompany, with awareness and communal hygiene, the effort that those who work to keep the city clean are making with limited resources but sustained will.
