Ciego de Ávila Accounts for Nearly Six Percent of Accident Deaths in Cuba During 2025

43 fatalities and 204 injured persons is the toll from the 156 traffic accidents occurring in Ciego de Ávila during the year 2025. These figures not only represent an increase compared to 2024 (+6 accidents, +14 deaths and +22 injured) but also place the territory as one of the highest in the country in terms of road mortality.

In Cuba during the past year, 7,538 accidents, 750 fatalities and 6,718 injured persons were reported. This behaviour shows a higher lethality in incidents occurring in the Avilanian territory compared to the national average.

The capital municipality concentrated the highest record of accident indicators (77 incidents), with 15 fatalities and 71 injured, followed by Morón, with 29 accidents and 8 fatalities; Majagua, with 13 accidents and also 8 deaths, showing high lethality; and Chambas, with 11 accidents and 5 fatalities.

Regarding typology, collisions between moving vehicles predominated, while the main identified cause was failure to respect the right of way.

When analysing the incidents, two-wheeled vehicles showed significant behaviour: motorcycles registered 49 accidents with 7 fatalities, and mopeds 26 accidents with 3 deaths. For its part, public transport accounted for 35% of the fatalities in the province.

On the other hand, when evaluating occurrence involving pedestrians, 22 incidents were reported with a toll of 4 fatalities and 15 injured. Despite a slight decrease in accident rates, this was not the case regarding fatal victims, where an increase of 2 deaths compared to the previous year is observed.

Major Alexander Sánchez González, head of the Provincial Traffic Directorate, pointed out that the occurrence of three serious (mass) accidents in 2025 led to the increase in accident, death and injury indicators.

The figures confirm the need to strengthen road safety education, respect for traffic regulations and preventive actions, in a scenario where the majority of accidents could have been avoided and where mortality proportionally exceeds the weight the province has within the national total.

Sánchez González explained that measures have been adopted to strengthen operations on the most accessible roads and in the month of January of this year a notable decrease in the three measurable parameters is observed in the province.
