The 67th anniversary of the Popular Armed Uprising of September 5, 1957, will be commemorated today in this city in a solemn act and pilgrimage of the people of Cienfuegos, to pay tribute to the heroes and martyrs of the popular uprising against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista.
In José Martí Park, one of the main scenes of the uprising, there will be a symbolic seizure of the former San Lorenzo school, the old police station and the municipal town hall, as well as in Cayo Loco, where the Navy base was located.
As is the solemn tradition, the names of the fallen in combat will be called out and multiple floral offerings will be taken in pilgrimage to the Tomás Acea cemetery, where the remains of those who gave their lives for the homeland on that day rest.
That 5th of September became a historic day, in which members of the 26th of July Movement and some members of the Navy of Fulgencio Batista’s Army, staged a rebellious uprising by storming key points of the government in power.
The military objective of the young men was to take up arms and open a new front in the Escambray, in support of the rebel struggles in the Sierra Maestra against tyranny.
Although the military objective was not achieved, the combatants of 5 September showed the world the justice of the revolutionary struggles and highlighted the internal fragmentation of Batista’s army.
