Boxing seeks national champion team

There will be a competition for three posters a day from Monday to Sunday.

The grand final of the national team boxing tournament will be held at the Rafael Fortún multi-purpose hall in the city of Camagüey, with three daily 10-fight card contests starting this Monday.

As confirmed at the technical meeting, seven teams will take part, all reinforced with men from other provinces that could not qualify in search of the scepter held by Camagüey.

The teams present are Pinar del Río and Matanzas in the west, Sancti Spíritus, Cienfuegos and Camagüey in the centre, and Holguín and Guantánamo in the east.

Rolando Acebal, head coach of the island’s elite team, pointed out several points in order to improve the health of this sport for the upcoming international competitions.

He explained that grabbing and grappling should be avoided, so the referees of the tournament will be demanding because that is penalised worldwide.

In addition, the strategist stated that no disrespect can be shown to the opponent in the ring. Zero teasing and provocative gestures, which tarnish the show.

«We aspire to a cleaner boxing, to improve tactical discipline and to return to the elegance that has always characterised the Cuban school,» said the new national commissioner, Robinson Poll, from Agramontino.

Cienfuegos-Guantánamo, Matanzas-Pinar del Río and Camagüey-Sancti Spíritus will compete in Monday’s debut. Holguín will have a rest.
