Avilanians consolidate contributions to Cuba’s energy transition

With the preparation of the land, work began in the municipality of Majagua, province of Ciego de Avila, for the assembly of a photovoltaic solar park (psfv) with a capacity of four mega watts (MW) and half of this figure for accumulation batteries, donated by the People’s Republic of China.

This new investment puts the territory of Avila in a better position to face the energy transition towards renewable energy sources, in addition to reducing electricity generation deficits during the hours of irradiation of the sun.

In the southwest of Ciego de Avila, the first stage of execution is more than 70 percent complete, as a result of the agility of the workers of the Empresa Constructora de Obras del Turismo «El Vaquerito» in the clearing of weeds and the general cleaning of the selected area, according to the local press.

Lisvany Ávila Peraza, in charge of the work, said that the schedule is progressing satisfactorily and this first phase should be completed this month in order to continue with the levelling of the land and the construction of roads, tasks that will require the efforts of other specialists linked to the project.

In a third stage, the technology will be assembled (piles, panel tables and the rest of the components of the photovoltaic solar park), taking advantage of the existing experience in the province to undertake these tasks with the required agility and quality.

Daniel Pérez García, general director of the Empresa Eléctrica Ciego de Ávila, told ACN about the solar park that has begun to be built in Majagua, that it should be completed and synchronised by next year.

He explained that this investment, having the potential to accumulate 2 MW of power, can provide them during peak night time, as well as improve the stability of the electricity service in the municipality of Majagua.

As part of the programme of transition to renewable energy sources, Ciego de Ávila is making progress in the construction of three photovoltaic solar parks with 21.87 MW of power each; the most advanced of these is located near the capital city, and the rest in the municipalities of Baraguá and Venezuela, where they are also on schedule.

In relation to the national plan to install two thousand MW in psfv until 2026, it is planned in the province to incorporate another two in the municipalities of Morón and Chambas, which would be added to sites of this type built in previous years.

At present, with four ppsfv in operation (15.6 MW), the location of another six and a bioelectric plant next to the Ciro Redondo sugar mill that is stable in its operation, this province occupies an advantageous position in relation to the others.

By considering these potentialities, Ciego de Ávila can be ahead of the country’s projections for the year 2030, said the director of the province’s electricity company.
