Avilanians Celebrate May Day Activities

The call for the international celebration of the working class was presented from the Conavil company in Ciego de Ávila, where the collective received its National Vanguard certificate during the event.

The workers of the Construction and Assembly Company (Conavil) hosted the presentation, in the central Cuban province of Ciego de Ávila, of the call for the celebration of International Working Class Day on 1 May.

Niurka Ferrer Castillo, Secretary General of the Provincial Committee of the Cuban Workers’ Federation (CTC), read out the organisation’s appeal for the traditional mass parade, in which the many messages and posters will be led by the central slogan: «The Homeland Defends Itself.»

The trade unionist highlighted that, in tribute to the commemoration, voluntary work days dedicated to food production, the boosting of production plans in entities, revolutionary reaffirmation rallies against the lies of Yankee imperialism, and the initiatives of the «Cuba Solutions» event against the economic blockade are taking place this month. The latter two actions are taking place in workplaces and Popular Councils.

The aforementioned construction company inaugurated the tribute activities for May Day in the Avilanian territory, in recognition of its collective, which, after hearing the call for the proletarian celebration, received the certificate confirming the renewal of its National Vanguard status.

Last year, the construction force redesigned its production and financial strategies, enabling it to fulfil the investment programme at 147 per cent, lay asphalt concrete on projects of provincial and national impact, including those at the Jardines del Rey International Airport on Cayo Coco, the remodelling of the Antonio Luaces Iraola hospital, and the construction of housing.

It was reported that the contribution would have been higher without the effects of the blockade against Cuba, among which were mentioned the deficit of AC-30 asphalt and fuel for the manufacture of asphalt concrete; the non-execution of the total planned budget, which prevented the acquisition of spare parts, cement and imported resources for the continuation of the east-central transfer canal; and the lack of steel prevented the completion of two buildings of 20 apartments each.

The men and women of Conavil overcame the challenges to win the hosting of the national event for Builder’s Day on 5 December 2025, and the Labour Proefficiency Flag for their extraordinary results in recovery efforts in Santiago de Cuba following the passage of Hurricane Melissa, among other accolades.
