Although sometimes little known to local audiences, Ciego de Ávila has talents scattered across the world.
Among them is 22-year-old volleyball player Yensy de la Caridad Kindelán, who in recent times has been a key figure for the national team.
The lanky middle blocker plays on the other side of the world, more than 9,600 kilometres away, in the women’s first division of the Romanian league.
She is part of the CSM Lugoj team, where she feels accompanied by other Cubans: Carmela Massip, Yelennis Díaz and Claudia Tarín.
During this month, Yensy took part in two matches with completely different results, corresponding to the definition of positions from fifth to eighth.
She first suffered a three-set defeat against CSM Constanta, and although Cubans Claudia Tarín (12 points) and Yensy Kindelán (9) were among the most outstanding players on their team, they could not avoid defeat against a fairly evenly matched squad (20-25, 18-25, 22-25).
Afterwards, the Avilanian showed all her offensive power. With 20 points, she led her team in that department and gave them a decisive victory in the final stages of the season (25-18, 21-25, 25-15, 25-11), according to the statistics website Sofascore.
CSM Lugoj’s aspirations to reach the podium ended when they lost to CSO Voluntari in two matches in the quarter-finals. Currently, CSO Voluntari leads Volei Alba Blaj 2-1 in the tournament’s grand final.
During the qualifying stage, CSM Lugoj had a negative record of six wins and twelve losses. Even so, it was enough to finish in seventh place among ten teams and qualify for the playoffs.
Although the team itself acknowledges on social media that this year’s performance was modest, young Avilanian Yensy de la Caridad Kindelán demonstrated her potential and prepared herself with a view to upcoming commitments with the Cuban team.
