Avilanian residents hold equal opportunities conference

The main purpose of the Equal Opportunities Day, which, as in the rest of the country, is scheduled to take place until 3 December in the central province of Ciego de Ávila, is for society to include people with disabilities in work, sports, cultural, educational and other activities.

In particular, in Ciro Redondo, the only municipality in the Avilanian territory with the status of National Vanguard of the National Association of the Blind (ANCI) for more than 10 years, rehabilitation actions are being carried out, informed Pablo León Águila, municipal president of this organisation, who argued that blind and low vision people have among the advantages the right to employment.

They work as associates in physiotherapy rooms, in the establishment of aqueduct and sewage collecting water service, video rooms and other centres, so they enjoy the same advantages as their co-workers, he exemplified.

He highlighted the support of a multidisciplinary team and local organisations, which has contributed to keeping this commission active, dedicated to monitoring the behaviour of Agreement 9040, of the Cuban Council of Ministers, to follow up on the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, concluded in 1992.

At the monthly meeting of this group in our municipality,» he stressed, «we not only bring our concerns, but also the successes of the association in cultural, sporting and recreational activities, appreciation workshops, and recreational sports tourism meetings that we hold every year in the northern keys of our province, among other achievements.

He said that they have a baseball team for blind people that practices in the Sergio Antuña municipal stadium; they also develop meetings with the workers of the Casa de Cultura, the museum and the library, in whose institutions they celebrate collective birthdays, dance competitions, and in sport they have the support of Julián Sardiñas Balboa, best recreational teacher in the country on several occasions.

A significant achievement has been the delivery of 18 masonry houses and another building is under construction, there are still some pending cases that I am sure will be solved, so that thanks to the Revolution none of the members of the association live in precarious conditions, he emphasised.

León Águila pointed out that Ciro Redondo was the founding municipality of ANCI in the province of Ciego de Avila, on 18 November 1978, and conveyed a message of thanks on behalf of its members for the solidarity of all the institutions, on the occasion of the advent of 3 December, the Day of Persons with Disabilities and Latin American Medicine.
