Fulfilling our commitments to our followers, today we remember the brilliant ex-boxer Armando Martínez, who was born on 29 August 1961, in the municipality of Majagua, Ciego de Ávila, Cuba.
He started boxing as a child, winning two gold medals and a silver medal in the National School Games. In 1978, he was crowned champion of the Central American and Caribbean Games in Medellín, in the 60 kg division.
After a successful string of triumphs, in 1980 he achieved Olympic glory in Moscow, in the 71 kg division, and was also world runner-up. His fights with the Canadian are well remembered. S. Sullivan.
Armandito was one of those spectacular boxers capable of stopping thousands of fans from their seats.
He was the first Olympic Champion from Ciego de Avila. The glory of Cuban sport resides in Havana.
