All intelligences are needed in design, Cuba suggests

We are going to learn to master artificial intelligence (AI) to take advantage of what it offers us and complement it with our own intelligences, Cuban academic and designer Eviel Ramos urged today.

The thoughtful message was addressed to design students and professionals, on the occasion of the 12th International FORMA_25 Congress, which concludes today, focusing on the challenges and perspectives of the use of AI in this discipline, about which Ramos stressed that all intelligences are needed in design.

AI imposes itself, it is a tool that helps, it imposes challenges, but the other intelligences are needed to complement it.

The dean of the Faculty of Communicative Design at the Higher Institute of Industrial Design (ISdi) explained to Prensa Latina that if we do not put a human sense into design, there is no way that AI is going to solve the problems we have.

AI, he pointed out, cannot replace the human, nor will it provide the ingredients it needs from the linguistic point of view, from the point of view of interaction, of mixing the different knowledge of marketing, communication and production to make a more social design.

The FORMA_25 Congress has been in session in the capital’s Palacio de las Convenciones since last Tuesday, with delegates from 10 Latin American and European countries, including Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Brazil, Mexico, Canada and Portugal.

At the opening of the event the day before, the rector of ISdi, Sergio Luis Peña, explained that AI is not fashion, and what it is about is to coexist with the new contributions that technology offers to humanity, he said.

Designers are creators of this new context and AI cannot be seen as a substitute for this creation, which must come from human intelligence, articulated and in coexistence with artificial intelligence, he stressed.

FORMA_25 included in its academic programme the 12th training meeting for design, communication and arts professionals and the 9th design and communication meeting.

It also included the 5th International Symposium on Research and Postgraduate Studies in Design; the 7th International Forum on Diversity and Sustainable Development and the 6th International Design – Production-Industry Workshop.
