Alert on cyclone impacts in September

The ninth month of the year concentrates the maximum cyclonic activity in the North Atlantic Ocean, whose statistical peak occurs around the 10th day, warned Professor Luis Enrique Ramos Guadalupe. Coordinator of the History Commission, of the Meteorological Society of Cuba.

Such an increase is related to the number of hurricanes affecting the nation, since, according to the official chronology of the Institute of Meteorology, 38 hurricanes in September have impacted the country between 1791 and 2024, equivalent to 31% of the total, added the expert in his commentary for the Cuban News Agency.

They represent, he emphasised, nearly a third of those that have struck the country in 233 years.

He emphasised that the highest number of tropical cyclone formations in a single month corresponds to September 2020, with nine systems; that is, one every 72 hours.

Regarding the Cuban archipelago, the trajectories that move longitudinally along the northern and southern axes stand out in the ninth month, which implies that on several occasions Cuba has been affected without the centre of the system crossing over the national territory.

Between 2003 and 2024, the most notable September hurricanes for Cuba have been Iván (2004), Ike (2008), Irma (2017) and Ian (2022), all of great intensity, which is why it is essential to be prepared to face their contingencies, Ramos Guadalupe finally recommended.
