The use outside of medical institutions of Misoprostol, a medication used to induce abortion, today generates a delicate situation in Ciego de Ávila.
In this regard, Gesler Beltrán Suarez, Head of the Gynecology and Obstetrics service at the Doctor Antonio Luaces Iraola Provincial Teaching Hospital, comments that the illegal sale of the drug began after the drug was imported by natural persons, causing its use without a medical prescription.
As he explained, the incorrect use of this drug can cause damage to the sexual health of women, hypovolemic shocks, due to blood loss and even death.
Misoprostol can only be used by medical services, Beltrán Suarez emphasized that if residues are found in patients arriving at the Emergency Department during the physical examination, a formal complaint must be made to the competent bodies and they can be sanctioned.
The voluntary interruption of pregnancy constitutes a right in Cuba guaranteed through free and safe access in specialized centers.
As such, it has a chain of steps to follow to preserve the physical and mental integrity of the pregnant woman; submitting to the use of misoprostol clandestinely puts her life at risk in committing a crime.
