ALBA-TCP holds extraordinary summit in Venezuela

The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-People’s Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP) will hold an extraordinary working meeting of heads of state and government in Caracas today to discuss important issues.

This meeting was announced last week by the Latin American and Caribbean integration mechanism in a communiqué, and among its purposes will evaluate the progress and results in the economic, social and political areas, following the 24th Summit last December.

It will also address respect for human rights and the dignity of migrant populations and the defence of the sovereignty and peace of all of Latin America and the Caribbean, following the most recent decisions of the new US administration that affect the region and its peoples.

The meeting coincides with the 230th anniversary of the birth of Antonio José de Sucre, said the text.

The integration mechanism affirmed that the commanders Hugo Chávez (1954-2013) and Fidel Castro (1926-2016) foresaw the insurgence of the multipolar world that is consolidating today against all hegemonic and supremacist pretensions, in which ALBA-TCP constitutes one of its strongest and most enlightened pillars.

At the meeting of 14 December last, the Heads of Government took concrete decisions in different areas and dimensions to consolidate the Alliance in an integral manner, under its founding and unalterable principles of cooperation, solidarity and complementarity, he recalled.

This summit commemorated the 20th anniversary of the birth of the Latin American and Caribbean integration bloc, and paid a fitting tribute to the founders of this strategic alliance: Chávez and Fidel.

The leaders, prime ministers and other authorities approved several documents, such as a special consensus declaration of «reaffirmation of the principles, objectives, commitments and banners of struggle of ALBA-TCP», 20 years after its creation.

They also expressed the will to move forward with the revitalisation of old and new agreements in the economic area, such as the birth of the great AgroAlba project to produce food «for all the peoples of Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and beyond».

They also proposed the revival of Petrocaribe in the new productive modality for investment «in oil, gas, derivatives and joint ventures», the resumption of the Sucre currency for monetary and commercial exchange, and progress in the signing of an intra-regional trade treaty.

Other announcements were linked to the emergence of a Science, Technology and Innovation Centre with scientific and technological priorities towards accelerated capacities in Artificial Intelligence and the management of social networks, among others.

The Final Declaration of this great event ratified the importance and commitment to defend the «Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace», approved in Havana, Cuba, in 2014 and which remains in full force and effect.
