Agreement Between Iran and US Does Not Refer to Ballistic Missiles

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated today that the memorandum of understanding signed between Iran and the United States, with Pakistani mediation, does not contain clauses related to Iranian ballistic missiles.

Sharif made these statements during a delegation meeting held within the framework of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s visit to Pakistan.

«The Islamabad memorandum of understanding does not mention ballistic missiles. They were never discussed, they were not on the agenda, and the Iranian side never wanted to discuss them,» declared the Pakistani head of government.

The prime minister also warned that there are international actors interested in sabotaging the agreement and argued that these actors do not want Iran to regain its strength and reach higher levels of development.

Sharif rejected what he called double standards regarding the possession of ballistic missiles and considered it unacceptable that some countries may possess such weaponry while Iran is prohibited from doing so.

The prime minister praised the work of Pakistani officials during the negotiating process and thanked Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt for their support of Islamabad’s mediation efforts.

Likewise, he assured that Pakistan will maintain its mediation role until achieving lasting peace, based on dignity and mutual respect.

On 14 June, Iran and the United States announced a 14-point memorandum of understanding, mediated by Pakistan, with the purpose of ending the war and resolving differences through dialogue and negotiation.

The document, called the Islamabad Understanding, entered into force on 18 June after being electronically signed by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and his US counterpart Donald Trump.

The agreement includes provisions on the end of the war, including in Lebanon, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the lifting of the US naval blockade against Iran.
