The performance of Avilanian footballer Onel Hernández in the current season, now concluded for him, undoubtedly went from lesser to greater, with a finish that will boost his chances of a club contract and his presence in the Cuban national team.
After several months in which the player’s prominence at Charlton Athletic had not been at its highest, his signing in February until the end of the campaign with Port Vale Football Club, in the third division of English football, allowed him to play a greater number of minutes.
Hernández took part in each of the team’s last eight matches, in which he accumulated one assist and four starts. In that period he also demonstrated versatility, playing as a forward and midfielder, but also contributing in defensive roles.
Judging by reports from the local press and comments from Port Vale supporters, the positive impact of the Avilanian on the team’s play was evident. The player himself, in a farewell post on his official Facebook profile, thanked the support he received at the club and wished them well for the future.
It would not be a surprise, despite that farewell, if the club offered him a new opportunity in their ranks, although their relegation to the fourth division could complicate that scenario. Even so, he will have more options to evaluate his future.
Meanwhile, the 33-year-old footballer now presents stronger credentials for inclusion in the national team, after having been left out of the squad for the March FIFA window, in which Cuba drew 2–2 with Martinique and 1–1 with the Dominican Republic.
Onel Hernández has several remarkable achievements for a Cuban footballer throughout his professional career in Europe, from figures of more than 450 matches in domestic leagues to the fact of being the only Cuba-born player to have scored a goal in the Premier League.
With the Lions of the Caribbean, he is not far behind, as in 15 appearances he has accumulated four goals, in addition to being part of the historic opening of the national squad to footballers residing abroad, and having always shown commitment on every occasion.
