Tropical Storm Erin on verge of becoming hurricane

Tropical Storm Erin increased its maximum sustained wind speed to 110 kilometres per hour (km/h), leading meteorologists to forecast today that it could become the first hurricane of this season.

In its most recent bulletin, the National Hurricane Centre highlighted that Erin is moving west-northwest near 28 km/h and this motion is expected to continue through the weekend.

On the forecast track, the centre of Erin is likely to move
near or just north of the northern Leeward Islands over the weekend.

Located 920 kilometres from the northern Leeward Islands at latitude 17.8 North, longitude 54.4 West, the hydrometeorological event continues its course through the Atlantic toward the west-northwest.

The report specifies that Tropical Storm Erin may produce areas of heavy rainfall beginning Friday night and continuing through the weekend across the northernmost Leeward Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands and British Virgin Islands, as well as southern and eastern Puerto Rico.
