Pedro Lapera, an incredible chess player

Perhaps there is no other chess player in Ciego de Ávila with the innate ability to leave a legacy than the late Pedro Lapera, who made his name in the 1940s and learned to play in a self-taught way, but with incredible will and intelligence.

Among his most outstanding performances was the victory over María Teresa Mora, Cuban champion during a match between the Avila team and the José Raúl Capablanca club in Havana. He also attended the National Chess Conventions from 1944 to 1946 and participated in the qualifiers for the World Olympiad in Havana, 1966.

In this picture on the right, he is receiving an award from Alfredo Barreras, then Municipal Director of Sports.
He went down in history as one of the most talented chess players in Ciego de Ávila.
