For a great communicator and statesman like Fidel Castro, a victorious human and political battle could not be fought without the heavy artillery of the media. That is why, when he called on our people to fight for the return of the child Elián González to his family and his homeland, along with the popular mobilisation, there was the media offensive.
From his ingenuity, in December 1999, the radio programme Mesa Redonda (Round Table) was born, to equip our people with ideas and arguments for the fight, based on knowledge and information.
That is why the founders and other comrades linked to the programme evoked this Saturday, at the Fidel Castro Ruz Centre, the teachings, exchanges and anecdotes experienced with the Commander in Chief in the midst of those fruitful years of the Battle of Ideas, just a few days before we commemorate the 98th anniversary of his birth.
Fidel left us a programme, but more than that, he left us political lessons, working methods, life lessons and an unshakeable faith in victory, was the spirit that emanated from the diverse evocations that took place in the exchange.
An emotional speech by Elián González Brotóns, full of gratitude to those who fought for their destiny and deep admiration for Fidel, confirmed to those present the value of the battle fought. Only the values forged in this young Cuban would have been enough for the sacrifice and dedication of his people.
This was also shown by Fernando González Llort, the anti-terrorist Hero, who recalled the encouragement that the Round Table brought them in the difficult days of prison and highlighted Fidel’s genius, capable of calling for a worldwide political battle for The Five, in a matter that many countries resolve only through intense and secret negotiations.
Fidel said Elián was coming back, and he came back. Fidel let the Five return, and they did.
Those feats of Fidel’s were also sung this emotional morning by troubadour Raúl Torres, who also did his sung tribute to Chávez that was premiered at the Round Table.
