Voices from Mexico call for an immediate end to the US blockade of Cuba

In the final declaration of the two-day meeting, the 280 delegates from various Mexican entities denounced the fact that the Greater Antilles has been facing Washington’s illegal encirclement for more than six decades.

«This unjust arbitrariness has not achieved its clumsy and foolish purpose, but it causes difficulties and hardships to the Cuban population in its struggle to satisfy essential needs,» the delegates said, rejecting this punishment of a nation for defending its independence, sovereignty and form of government.

On the diplomatic and political level, the Movement supported «the dignified position of our president, Claudia Sheinbaum, in favour of Cuba’s sovereignty and self-determination, rejecting the blockade that the United States of America unilaterally insists on imposing».

The statement also demanded that the North American country remove Cuba from «the immoral and unjust list of state sponsors of terrorism as a pretext for applying economic sanctions», as well as an unfounded one.

He also demanded that President Donald Trump’s administration return the illegally occupied territory in Guantánamo, in eastern Cuba, «which is and has been a torture centre and is currently being used against migrants who are trying to live and work with dignity in the United States».

The participants also thanked «the hard work of more than three thousand Cuban doctors of different specialties in 27 states of the Mexican Republic, caring for the health of our people in places where there are greater economic shortages and needs».

Organised by the Mexican Movement of Solidarity with Cuba, the meeting took place at a time when the siege imposed by the United States is intensifying, following the return to the White House of Donald Trump, who is seeking by all means to cut off the sources of financing for the Antillean country.

Also present at the event were diplomats from Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Vietnam and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, and representatives of organisations such as the Communist Party, the Communist Youth Front and the Association of Cuban Residents here.

Also attending on behalf of the island were Idania Ramos, in charge of Mexico at the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples; journalist Raúl Capote; Lil María Pichs, Deputy Director of Coordination of the Office of the Martiano Programme, and Elier Ramírez, Deputy Director of the Fidel Castro Ruz Centre.

Held at the Futurama Cultural Centre, the meeting is considered the preamble to the IX Continental Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba, to be held from 9 to 12 October this year in this capital.
