Venezuela Rejects US Presidential Memorandum Against Cuba

Venezuela today categorically rejected the new Presidential Memorandum issued by the United States Government against Cuba, which intensifies the economic, financial, and commercial blockade imposed on the island for over six decades.

The Bolivarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced in a statement that this policy «has unsuccessfully sought to subjugate a dignified and sovereign people».

It stated that this anachronistic, inhumane, and internationally unlawful policy represents one of the most evident historical failures of US foreign policy.

The official note expressed that this aggression «serves the interests of an inferiority-complexed political class, trapped in its deep-seated hatred against a free and sovereign nation like Cuba».

It underlined that once again, Washington places itself outside the international consensus – which year after year, with an overwhelming majority at the UN General Assembly – demands the immediate and unconditional lifting of the blockade.

The Venezuelan Executive expressed «its firmest solidarity with the people and Government of the sister Republic of Cuba, confident that it will resist with dignity, creativity, and courage».

This new offensive, like all previous ones, will also fail, assured the Foreign Ministry.

Yesterday, US President Donald Trump signed a Presidential Memorandum further intensifying what Havana authorities deem a criminal and human rights-violating policy, inflicting greater hardships upon the Cuban people.

Among other actions, the document ratified the prohibition of any direct or indirect financial transaction with Cuban entities such as the Grupo de Administración Empresarial S.A. and its subsidiaries. It also established stricter controls to prevent US tourists from travelling to Cuba.

Furthermore, it emphasised in one section that it «restores and strengthens the robust policy towards Cuba implemented during his first term» – when 243 additional punitive measures were enacted that drastically reinforced the economic, commercial, and financial blockade.

It additionally announced enforcement «through periodic audits and mandatory record-keeping of all travel-related transactions for at least five years».

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel denounced yesterday that the United States had adopted a new aggressive plan against Cuba, whose goal is «to inflict the greatest possible damage and suffering on the people. Its impact will be felt, but they will not break us,» he affirmed.
