The decision by the President of the United States to abandon the G7 Summit while it was in full swing surprised participants, who saw intentions to dialogue with the representative of a key nation in the group vanish.

It is not as if the G7 Summit is precisely a serious forum for addressing, let alone finding solutions to, humanity’s grave problems. History bears witness to this, although the diplomatic appearance might have served as a postcard.

But the snub by the US President was not expected at this forum, which had Canada as host nation from 15th to 17th June, and an agenda of urgent topics such as the military escalation between Israel and Iran, which began with Israeli attacks on the Persian country a few days ago; the genocide Israel is also committing against the Gazan population; the war in Ukraine instigated by the US and European nations; the increasing tariff tensions, produced by Trump’s presidential decree, which are causing the global market to plummet; and the fiercest crackdown against immigrants on US soil; to cite just a few recent examples.

Are we on the brink of the third world war or are we already living through it? The truth is, the powerful countries could well contribute something towards common sense.

But with Trump, nothing is known for certain. He alleged he had to return early to Washington to monitor the situation in the Middle East. The leader apparently forgets that what happens in that region is thanks to his country’s veto in the UN Security Council and the supply of state-of-the-art armaments to its ally Israel. And he said more: “I am not looking for a ceasefire, we are seeking something better than a ceasefire,” as appears on his Truth Social network. He added that he wanted a “total surrender” by Iran.

The truth is, he left. He abandoned his powerful allies. Could it be that in an enlightened second he realised that this G7 summit is no different from its predecessors and would not bring effective solutions for the majority of humanity? Ah, no, sorry, we are talking about President Trump. Let us await news.
