José Luis Martínez Alejo, correspondent for the Trabajadores newspaper in Ciego de Ávila, and photojournalist/cartoonist Osvaldo Gutiérrez Gómez (Osval) from this province, were awarded prizes in the 26 de Julio competition, convened annually by the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC).
What once was… will it be again? is the title of the report by a collective of authors from the aforementioned media outlet, including Martínez Alejo, which was selected in that category for its «high public interest» and «immense social impact,» among other aspects.
Osval, for his part, won the top award in Cartoons, Comics, and Illustrations, for an untitled work that «is well-executed, simple, and simultaneously illustrative of a reality that significantly impacts the daily lives of Cubans.»
The jury’s verdict, chaired by Iramis Alonso Porro, was announced this Tuesday via videoconference. It revealed that Ideas Multimedios, Cubaperiodistas, Trabajadores, and the Guerrillero publishing house were among the most awarded entities.
The most awarded individuals across the different categories specified in the event’s rules were Randy Alonso Falcón (Ideas Multimedios); Enrique Milanés (Cubaperiodistas website); Yolanda Molina Pérez (Guerrillero publishing house); and Abdiel Bermúdez (Canal Caribe).
Around 200 journalistic works across different genres were submitted to the 26 de Julio competition, among which Cuban radio stood out with over 80 entries.
