Triples player Lazaro Martinez gets off to a good start in winter season

He won a meeting in France with a mark of over 17 metres.

Cuba’s Lazaro Martinez needed just two attempts to take first place in the triple jump at the Indoor Athletics Meeting in Val-de Reuil, France.

The Guantanamo-born athlete jumped to 16.84m with the initial jump, which would have been enough for him to dominate the competition. However, he took advantage of the second round to reach 17.03m, a jump with which he closed his incursion in the event with a silver medal in the World Athletics Indoor Tour 2025.

In addition to the victory, the mark guaranteed him second place in the universal ranking for the current indoor campaign, behind Jamaica’s Jordan Scott, who jumped 17.11m at the beginning of the year.

Behind the Cuban were now the host Thomas Gogois (16.69), bronze medallist at the 2024 European Championships, and Turkey’s four-time champion Can Ozupek (16.37).

Martínez, eighth at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and world runner-up at Budapest 2023, is one of the top athletes on the island ahead of the next world indoor championships, to be held in the Chinese city of Nanjing from 21-23 March.

The pupil of former star Yoelbi Quesada, who has an indoor record of 17.64m achieved in March 2022, will return to action on 8 February at the Metz Athletics Meeting, also in France.

Two days before that, high jumper Luis Enrique Zayas, who will be one of the main protagonists at the Meeting in Udine, Italy, is scheduled to make his debut in the winter campaign.
