Tribute to Rogelio López Herrera on 32nd Anniversary of His Passing

This 6 August marks 32 years since the death of Rogelio López Herrera, an emblematic figure of Cuban weightlifting, whose legacy as athlete and coach endures in national sport.

Born in Ciego de Ávila, López Herrera began his weightlifting career in 1965, rising swiftly to join the national preselection in 1967. He became Cuban champion in the 90-kilogram division and competed at prestigious international events, particularly in Europe.

In 1971, post-retirement as an athlete, he assumed the coach’s role, shining with equal brilliance. His dedication and professionalism moulded multiple generations of weightlifters, including two-time Pan American champion Carlos Alexis Hernández.

With unbreakable resolve, Rogelio forged not only champions but achieved cohesion and success among his disciples across all categories. His name remains synonymous with respect, admiration and affection in sporting circles.

He died on 6 August 1993 while fulfilling a mission in Mexico, yet his example persists as a paradigm of Cuban sport. Today, weightlifting remembers him as a man who «carved his path through walking». Honour where honour is due!
