The Day of the Cuban Architect begins its celebration

The provincial directorate of the National Union of Architects and Construction Engineers of Cuba (UNAICC) announced in this capital its traditional monthly day for the Day of the Cuban Architect, established on the same date in 1935 by agreement of the National Assembly of associates that met in the province of Matanzas.

One of its initiatives is aimed at paying tribute, in the Colón Necropolis, to its members who passed away in 2024: Edmundo Azre Tillan and Marciala Julia León Lacher, who will receive the Postmortem Recognition for Life and Work, and Ricardo Porro Hidalgo.

In information to the Cuban News Agency, the board of the Cuban Society of Architecture informed that the provincial Life and Work Award will be presented to Gastón Fernández Goyenechea, of the Grupo Empresarial de Materiales de la Construcción.

Likewise, the High Level Professional Diploma will be awarded to María Elena Fumero Ferreiro, Mariela Durán Gómez and Sergio Rayman Arencibia Iglesias; and the «Fernando Salinas González de Mendives» to Lucia Silva Fernández, the best graduate.

They will also announce the winning works of the «Jewels of Havana’s Architecture» survey and the award ceremony of the 13 de Marzo children’s competition.

The celebration of the Day of the Cuban Architect took on greater significance when on that very date in 1957, a commando of the University Student Federation, led by its leader José Antonio Echeverría, took over the Radio Reloj radio station as part of the actions to execute the dictator Fulgencio Batista in the Presidential Palace.

His speech during that audacious operation will be heard on the current day, which includes the laying of a wreath on the side of the University of Havana, where he was shot dead by police officers.

Another part of the programme is entitled The architect and his work, at the Casa de las Tejas Verdes, in the capital’s Playa municipality, with a talk by Doctor of Science Norman Medina Pérez.
