Specialists watch out for receding coastline

The main impacts of climate change on the sandy beaches of the northern keys of Morón are expressed in the retreat of the coastline by an average of one to two metres per year.

The increase in submerged area, erosion, migration of sand out of the dynamic, rock outcrops and reduction of the berm area also have an unfavourable effect.

This was stated by specialists from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment in the province of Avila, who added that all this increases coastal vulnerability to extreme weather events such as hurricanes, as well as the loss of large areas of land in several of the keys such as Guillermo and Paredón Grande, both in the medium and long term.

According to these estimates, by the year 2050, Guillermo Cay will be affected by almost 50 per cent of its total area, while Paredón Grande will be affected by about 75 per cent, elements to be taken into account given the tourism development that this area is experiencing.

The actions for the implementation of the Tarea Vida in the municipality of Morón include comprehensive interventions in the areas and places prioritised on the basis of the effects they have experienced in recent years, as well as their influence on the economic and social development of the territory.
