The Cuban National Seismological Service is advancing in the modernisation of its system for recording and analysing seismic activity through the incorporation of solar energy at its stations, reported Armando Rodríguez Batista, Minister of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), from his Facebook profile.
All facilities were equipped with photovoltaic panels and batteries, which made it possible to guarantee continuous operations without dependence on the National Electroenergy System.
The Alternative Central Station in Holguín recently incorporated a medium-sized photovoltaic system, while a similar project is being executed at the System’s Central Station in Santiago de Cuba.
According to specialists, this energy autonomy ensures the stability of seismic records and reduces the rate of breakdowns in recording and communications equipment, which are imported at high cost.
CITMA reported that these actions form part of the national strategy for transitioning towards renewable sources and strengthen the capacity to respond to natural phenomena.
With this initiative, the National Seismological Service has consolidated its scientific infrastructure and reaffirmed its commitment to energy sustainability and the protection of the population against seismic risks.
