Silence in Matanzas: Pain does not fit in this city

Nobody knows how to write pain. Nobody knows if, in truth, the words can reflect the pain when it is so deep and sinks in the soul of the living, of the noble and good people. Silence is the way to feel it, to let it hurt; deep silence, like pain itself.

For Fourteen days, Matanzas has not stopped feeling how sadness slips through the streets. But this Friday, the silence of the whole city is dense. There is mourning in Cuba.

Matanzas bids farewell to firefighters and civilians who died in the most devastating fire in the history of the country, which occurred at the Matanzas Supertanker Base. In the Firemen’s Museum of the city, where honor is paid to the fallen, the tribute begins at ten o’clock in the morning. Silence.
