Sheinbaum and Lula Discussed Regional Situation and Sovereignty

The Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, said today that she conversed with her Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, about the regional situation and the defence of sovereignty, in a context marked by the United States aggression against Venezuela.

«We spoke about many topics. We spoke about the situation in Latin America and the defence of sovereignty,» reported the head of the Executive, in response to a question about the telephone call during her habitual press conference, this time from the southwestern state of Guerrero.

Sheinbaum commented to Lula about the agreement on security matters between the United States and Mexico and reported that, due to statements by the North American ruler, Donald Trump, she asked Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente to contact his counterpart from the neighbouring nation, Marco Rubio.

«I asked, because of the statements President Trump has made these days –which we consider part of his way of communicating–, Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente to make direct contact with the Secretary of State and, if necessary, speak» with the Republican, she pointed out.

This, she specified, «to strengthen coordination within the framework we have explained already on several occasions.»

Trump said yesterday he would attack cartels by land, almost a week after Washington’s aggression against Venezuela in an operation during which it kidnapped President Nicolás Maduro and took him to North American territory to judge him on alleged charges of narcoterrorism.

Sheinbaum affirmed this Friday that she also spoke with Lula about the follow-up to the visit made last August by the Brazilian Vice President, Geraldo Alckmin, along with a very broad group from the cabinet of the administration and businessmen of the South American nation.

«There is a significant advance in some areas of work and collaboration and so that we can strengthen these areas,» explained the dignitary, who informed that the head of state of the South American giant invited her to visit Brazil next May, which she is considering.

She added that Lula is doing very important work to address violence against women in Brazil, regarding which she proposed that the Secretary for Women, Citlalli Hernández, get in contact with them so they can learn about what has been done in Mexico.

Alckmin and De la Fuente signed at the end of August a Joint Declaration for the follow-up and implementation of trade and investment agreements, as well as those referring to topics of agriculture, health and energy.
